Ran across this word in the OED which definitely needs to become part of my vocabulary. As a noun, it means "An overturn, upset, overthrow; a state of confusion." As a verb it means "to overturn, capsize; upset, throw into confusion," and to cover something by turning something else upside down over it, to submerge or drown in a flood, or to "tumble over . . . move unsteadily, or stumble about". It's apparently derived from 'whelm'. It appears to be also used for dumping something over so it will drain properly.
