Decision: Humors class

The humors class will be in the active learning style and taught in persona.
Why? Because, bloody hell, it's too complicated beyond the basics and I don't have enough of it mastered to be able to do something complicated. Besides, I have trouble going beyond simple repetitive declarative sentences. "This is a ball. The Ball is red. Yes, bounce the ball. Good bouncing the ball! Do you like the Red ball?" these days.
There will be handouts which is unperiod but well, deal. They will be handed out as they are needed so we can all be active learners. :)
0) this advice should not be used without consulting a qualified physician who can examine the patient's urine, cast his horoscope, etc. before prescribing.
1) Temperaments: melancholic, phlegmatic, choleric, sanguine
exercise 1: ask people to define the terms (group discussion)
2) The humors and their elements
Exercise: label them on their diagrams
3) The naturals and non-naturals and their effect on temperament: age, sex, climate, etc; and degree of activities (sex, bathing, exercise, etc.)
exercise: diagnose each other's temperaments
4) Galen: Laxative and costive
Exercise (individual): list 3 of each laxative and costive
5) Moderation of the humors as a treatment plan
6) Humors of foods
a) meats
b) grains
c) veg
d) spices & seasonings
e) other
7) effects of cooking treatments on humors of foods
8) Analyze sick-dish(es)

Ha! My cunning plan worked
Date: 2010-01-19 11:25 pm (UTC)Actually, it sounds very interesting, especially the in persona part, but if I just complimented you directly you would send commandos to seach for the pod... :-P
Mind sending me a copy of the handout after the class is over?

Date: 2010-01-20 03:37 am (UTC)One word: patients.
Got any friends (who'll be at the event) who can be coerced into play-acting? Who can be brought in for live demonstrations, say, towards the end of the class? You could call in a "patient," go all Socratic method on the students -- what is afflicting this patient? how would you cure it? -- and then either demonstrate the cure, or send them off with the "medicine."
It would be great if you could bring in four patients, and have them each demonstrate aspects of the humoural imbalance of each of the humours (i.e., a melancholic lump, a choleric madman, etc.) -- greater still if you had access to some sort of cosmetic or prosthetic that would help with the illusion of the humoural imbalance. ;)
AWESOME
