My co-worker alerted me to a sidebar in a article in New Scientist, which claimed
  • Location division in apple allergies: "People in northern and central Europe are more likely to be allergic to uncooked apple flesh, while an allergy to apple skin is more common in southern Europe."
  • "Iceland is a hotspot for fish allergies."
  • "Switzerland is a hotspot for celeriac allergies."
  • "The Mediterranean is a hotspot for peach allergy."

-per Jaella, I already know that Finns have a disproportionate amount of lactose intolerance.

Celiac is more prevalent in Irish, Scottish, and other Northern European people, and virtually unheard of in African and Asian descent.

And I've heard the lactose intolerance is also prevalent in Asian, but rare in E. European. However, E. European folks, especially of Jewish descent, are more likely to get ulcerative colitis. Which is sometimes triggered by milk protein allergy. Then again, a large number of people who think they have lactose intolerance actually have milk protein allergy.

I am actually quite intrigued by this topic.

Celeriac is celery root, which is nummy stuff & common in central European dishes. Celiac's something else. I think it's seriously unfortunate that Iceland has a lot of people with fish allergies, when you consider the food options over there.

The library where I work at had to drop New Scientist last year when we had to make some very painful choices. I realize why we did so, but that doesn't make things any easier even today.

Yes. I have a moderate wheat intolerance so I'm up on celiac.

I like celery, but just the usual stalky bits dipped in my peanut butter and buffalo chicken sauce and whatnot, and celery seeds in tuna salad. I'm just getting to the point where I'll chop up the leaves and add them to a soup. I'm not sure I'm ready for further celery experiences.

it kinda creates yet another take on how too much of one thing is a bad thing
