Ok, I'm trying to *start* a meme.
Here's the Popular Mechanics list of 50 tools everyone should have:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/home_journal/tools/4314786.html
I've BOLDED the ones I/we own, and italicized the ones on our "must get SOON" list, and underlined the "why bother" ones:

  1. Sledgehammer (Nothin' like a guy with a sledgehammer)
  2. Center punch
  3. Putty Knife (of all kinds; Sarah is the spackling queen, and I like them for scraping paint)
  4. Safety glasses (I don't wear them often because I have glasses, but we have lots for Juergen and also some for glass torch work)
  5. Adjustable Wrench (we have three sizes; you really need to have at least 2 of these)
  6. Pipe wrench (Juergen really wants a LARGE one)
  7. Socket Wrench Set
  8. Metal File
  9. Combination Square
  10. Combination Wrench
  11. Bow saw (I want one but can't justify it now)
  12. Jigsaw (if we continue to not be able to find ours, I'll be getting a new one!)
  13. Coping saw (I miss mine)
  14. Side cutting pliers (we need these!)
  15. Hacksaw (we have 2)
  16. Cross-cut saw
  17. Snips
  18. Roundnose shovel (in 2 sizes!)
  19. Needle-nose pliers (somewhere around here)
  20. Drill
  21. Drill bits (Juergen is a screwdriver bit addict, but I buy drill bits too).
  22. Locking pliers (We had one, but now I can't find it)
  23. Level
  24. Circular Saw
  25. Spray lube (we have a little WD40)
  26. Tape rule
  27. Hammer
  28. Dust Mask
  29. Nail set
  30. Machinist Vise
  31. Wood Chisel (I need more)
  32. Chalk Line
  33. Allen Wrench
  34. Earmuffs
  35. Flashlight
  36. Bow Rake (our old one died)
  37. Volt/Ohmmeter
  38. Cold Chisel
  39. Ballpeen hammer
  40. Multibit screwdriver
  41. Gooseneck bar
  42. Utility knife
  43. Pry Bar
  44. Square-nose shovel
  45. Tongue-and-groove pliers
  46. Extension Ladder
  47. Pick
  48. Stepladder
  49. Rope (we need to buy more)
  50. Extension cord

So, if you feel like it, copy and paste the list to your LJ and follow suit.

Hmmm. All I am missing is the bow saw.

Which I haven't really needed, so far. I can use several of my other saws (cross-cut, miter, gentlemans, coping) or power tools (circular, table, jig, scroll). The only time I was truly tempted, I borrowed a chain saw instead. :-)

Wow. We have ALL of these, multiples of several (particularly shovels) and yet NOTHING around here gets fixed in a timely fashion.

The list must be missing an item :-)

Several.

Thank goodness for hardware stores. :-)

The list is missing the most important item...

the round tuit

Now, if I can find a supply of those, the fact that we have few of the listed tools (but of some we have lots... like pliers!) wouldn't stand in our way and more would get done.

1. Sledgehammer (one for home, one for Pennsic)
2. Center punch (actually we might have one. I can't remember.)
3. Putty Knife (several)
4. Safety glasses
5. Adjustable Wrench (at least three -- 8", 10", 12", there may be other sizes or duplicates)
6. Pipe wrench (14" is plenty big enough, and larger may not be maneuverable enough for you guys)
7. Socket Wrench Set (At least four of these, two live in cars)
8. Metal File
9. Combination Square
10. Combination Wrench (assuming this is what I think it is)
11. Bow saw (a small one)
12. Jigsaw (wish I had one, but...)
13. Coping saw (see #12)
14. Side cutting pliers (what do these look like?)
15. Hacksaw (three)
16. Cross-cut saw (standard wood saw, I assume)
17. Snips
18. Roundnose shovel
19. Needle-nose pliers (LOTS of them)
20. Drill (2)
21. Drill bits (what's the point of 2 drills without bit sets?)
22. Locking pliers (Two or three pairs)
23. Level
24. Circular Saw (see #12)
25. Spray lube (spray silicone, spray graphite, WD40, and WD40's Really Big Brother)
26. Tape rule (several, including the 100-footer that's older than me)
27. Hammer (multiple types and sizes)
28. Dust Mask
29. Nail set (depends on what this is)
30. Machinist Vise (oh I want one but where would I put it?)
31. Wood Chisel (unless [livejournal.com profile] montuos has them and I forgot she did)
32. Chalk Line
33. Allen Wrench (multiples. Especially the ones from IKEA.)
34. Earmuffs (meaning, sound-deadening headphones, right?)
35. Flashlight (all sizes)
36. Bow Rake
37. Volt/Ohmmeter (but I want a better one)
38. Cold Chisel (see #31)
39. Ballpeen hammer (not that I've used it recently)
40. Multibit screwdriver the oldest of which is maybe 30+ years old)
41. Gooseneck bar (though I think it's in storage)
42. Utility knife (many, but I use with extreme caution)
43. Pry Bar
44. Square-nose shovel (only one, unless the ice chopper also counts)
45. Tongue-and-groove pliers (to or three pairs)
46. Extension Ladder (unused recently)
47. Pick
48. Stepladder
49. Rope (one ALWAYS needs to buy more)
50. Extension cord (have lots of 'em, need to get certain specialized ones)
