Apparently, lots of people carry emergency reading in their car:

So, do you have something to read stashed in your car?

3 novels, some children's books, coloring books and crayons, A book on Mongolia, and if I get desperate, the Road Atlas. Oh yeah, and a few class handouts that haven't made it into the house yet...

I keep magazines.
I prefer to read books in one go, so the length of the articles in magazines tends to suit my needs better.
Currently some 20 year old Gourmet, and a recent Wooden Boat.

That's a good idea. I'm afraid books will get messed up, but magazines usually get recycled anyway. I'll start doing that!

All the time, but my variable stash travels with me. Ah, for my old Respectability Bag, that books and full-sized typing paper could travel in easily....

Same as amaebi, variable stuff that travels with. Books, articles, study/refresher material if we're on the way to doing a demo. Usually whatever fiction book we're working through -- since L and I usually travel together, I'll read aloud for part of the trip. I used to have a book on tape that I liked listening to bits of as I went to/from one of my old jobs... I should dig it out to listen to again -- Instructions to the Cook: A Zen Master's Lessons in Living a Life That Matters, by Bernard Glassman and Rick Fields.

:-D

Something to read, sure! And while I'm reading the water will be boiling for tea or oatmeal (butane stove) all of which rides in the van year round.

But that's just me and no one should be surprised at that :-D

I keep a book with me pretty much all the time.

Does it count that the four books in my backpack are in my car by default if I'm in it?

Otherwise, a bunch of ADC maps, Google Maps printouts, and the fascinating read of Owner's Manual... ;>

Not stashed in the car as such, simply because we traded in the van for a Camry and there's not much room when you jam in five people!

But there's a reason I carry a nice big bag--even a HC Harry Potter novel fits in it nicely! Along with a small hardcover journal, with shopping lists, books I want to read (so I don't get in a bookstore and become paralyzed for choice) and blank paper for sketching costuming ideas.

I have The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, The Wise Woman, The Breastfeeding Book, a couple of sign magazines, and quite a bit of newspaper. And I think there's a copy of the Constitution in the glove box.

The History of Germany, Part I

Travels with me wherever I go. Always in the van. When I finish that? Who knows.

Oh dear.

Survey reveals a trashy tell all book about the House of Windsor, a book on "Birthing Naturally" (might come in handy pretty soon), and the Worst Fiction Novel Ever Written, "Forever and the Night" by Linda Lael Miller.

Must improve my trunk library before snowstorm season.

Doesn't everyone keep books stashed in their car? I usually have a bit of sci-fi, a trashy romance, some fantasy, and often a reference book or two.

Well there is always a book with me-and now that I'm relying on public transport normally two since I never know when I'm going to finish one. But when I had a car I kept "Taming of the Shrew" with me for stuck in traffic blahs. I never did finish it though.

Not hardcopy. I don't like risking them getting messed up sliding around and such. I usually have an audio book that I am listening too. I almost always have my iPod stocked with lots of podcasts. Maybe I'll rummage around and find a couple of old paperbacks to stash. We have a little storage bin in the pickup that would make a good spot. The book would get hot but not dirty.
