Gotta tell this story... (The context is SCA, Kingdom of the East.
Mistress Brid is a Celt right down to her toes, but also a very kind and gentle person. She's a spinner, weaver, etc.)
She came into court this past Saturday to make her fealty to the King & Queen.
Toki Redbeard, who is a Norse poet-bard type, heralded her in. (Think Chaucer in Knight's Tale, but Norse and introducing a Celt.)
Mistress Brid stands there and says "I Am Brid nic Shearlais. I spin thread for the Nether Garments of Kings." Big laugh.
"My old friend; Glorious queen; I greet you."
*pause* "I have the right to sit before kings. Have you no chair for me, man?!"
King Thorson was quick. He gets up, pulls out the footstool before his throne, and then... sits down on it himself and motions Brid to sit on the throne.
Brid is nonplussed. She says to the audience. "Like Cuchlainn, I will put my wise thumb in my mouth and think what to do. Pray for me." (another big laugh)
She finally sits in the chair, and says, "I am a Celt and though my fealty is given to the crown through my office, I am here to give my personal fealty. Because I am Celt and I give my fealty where I will. And I want to do this, because, my old friend, my gracious queen, you have done so much in this reign for the good of the people, and what you have done will improve the kingdom. And so, I am here to give my fealty, because I am a Celtic woman, and my fealty, like the friendship of my thighs, is given where I will."
(General laughter. Muttering on stage which we didn't hear but ended with Brid saying, "That's all Right. I don't share well."
Fealty ceremony goes on.
That alone was worth travelling toVermont Maine for.
