Monday, I went out and bought a jug of burgundy for the mustards class, plus some brandy and vodka for another run of my anti-gas cordial. Didn't get to making the cordial last night, but I did start the super-simple clove tincture that [livejournal.com profile] sister_devora taught to me for cold sores and other mouth and throat soreness. Basically put 1 part cloves in a jar, add 6 parts vodka, and steep for at least 2 weeks. Very useful stuff in 1/2 teaspoon doses.

Do you crush the cloves or leave them whole?

I leave them whole. It makes them easier to strain out. And cloves are so strong it isn't necessary.

(Someone asked me how long you could keep ground cloves before they were no good anymore. I told them that no-one had ever measured the half-life of ground cloves, so as far as I knew, it was pretty much indefinitely.)

I'm pretty sure my mother has some cloves that are older than I am and they are every bit as pungent today as they were the day I was born.

Burgundy, brandy and vodka in what proportions? There are some meals that REQUIRE me to do something about the gas afterwards.... :-P :-P
