Found this running about in our collection, thought I'd note it:

Sterling Dow and Rober F. Healey. A Sacred Calendar of Eleusis. (Harvard Theological Studies XXI). Cambridge, Harvard University Press: 1965.
Commentary, explication and description on a series of fragments describing the calendar of festivals and sacrifices at the temple(s) at Eleusis.

Stopped by the Public library today and picked up some more mythology books. (I'll post more on the Norse/Viking ones later). I thought I'd share my thoughts on the other picture books that cover Demeter/Persephone here.

I've got a few more versions to discuss in a later post, and then I'll touch on the Norse picture books as well.

In general, the mythology of Demeter/Ceres gets short shrift in most settings. In part this is because in Rome, Ceres was a plebian Goddess; it's also because some of the juiciest bits of her mythology were probably bound up with the Eleusinian Mysteries, whose details could not be told under pain of death.

Of course, there is one story that shows up in the mythological corpus with great regularity: the Rape of Persephone. It is described in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter:

A week ago last Friday....

I've always wanted to do the Sukkot thing, it sounds like fun, and I'm all about doing fun things in the name of religion. Sarah and I had talked about it desultorily. However, that week Sarah kept talking about doing something for Equinox. (For those who come into this late, we're a tri-religious family: I'm pagan, Juergen is non-church Christian, and Sarah and daughter Becky are Jewish. So, yes, this is silly.)

Finally I got the email from the campus Hillel person about Sukkot on Friday and said to Sarah, "Let's do a Sukkot-Equinox thing tonight!" ( Read more... )
