Trota or Trotula

About.Com women's history writer gives a short profile of Trotula, alleged medieval woman doctor:

Do you read much fiction?

I recently read The Mistress of Death by Ariana Franklin. It's about a woman doctor, school in Palermo, who goes to England to solve a murder. Set in 1100s England.

The Trotula story reminded me of the main character.

There is alot of confusion around it. Trotula/ Trota being also "teacher".
How many years have they fought now to determine if "she" was a person or a title. I lean towards person. I think due to the time line, it was another male minded cover-up :)
