Wyoming Libraries have mounted a library publicity campaign which includes an image based on the MudFlap Girl:

I LOVE the Library Mudflap Girl. However, many female (and some male) librarians are deeply offended by her. I can see their point. But I still think she's great and I want a silhouette of her on my car!

She's also being used to promote the statewide subscription to Chilton's.

I also love some of their other ads...

and the Cold Dead Fingers bumper sticker:

Which I consider the ultimate retort to certain pressure groups...

Oh, and an MP3 for Liam: Wicked Elk Hunt

There's a postmodernist term for taking a symbol of the dominant paradigm and twisting it to serve your own ends. I *think* this is what this is doing, but I'm a third wave feminist and NOT a postmodernist at all....?

I LOVE the campain. As someone who grew up in WY, I think it is great. The libraries are one of my best memories there. I spent HOURS every day in ours. (but then I'm a geek)

And yeah, I can see why some people would be offended. But I think it's amusing, and yeah, I'd stick one on my car. But couldn't resist my first impulse for a comment :-P

People who would get offended by the literate mudflap girl, need to get a life.

On the Cold Dead Fingers, one, I could see doing a pic of a Spartan with a mess of scrolls or codices, and the captions,

"Want my books?" at the top, and
"Molon Labe" (Come and take them) on the bottom.

I never, ever thought I would say this, but I want to move to Wyoming

It's lovely there!

Tall mountains, great skiing, nice and quiet.

Now if you like to shop, we have a problem...

Having read that (grin) I'm thinking that extreme upstate NY, where I am, is a lot like Wyoming, except we don't have jackalopes. We do have fishers...and what are these golf clubs of which the joke speaks?

The best rendition of the "mup flap girl" I've seen is on a sticker one of my co-workers (I haven't figured out who yet) has on their truck - the girl is rendered in rainbow colors.

Why, yes, you are a wierdo — and so am I.

We need to make T-shirts out of the new mudflap girl!

I have no words to describe my delight and glee -- other than "almost peed my pants."

I almost didn't see the link because I was showing Alethea the other links.

I want to go work for that marketing company.

Speaking from Wyoming:

That will probably be an effective campaign logo.

Man, do I loathe-- and am I exhausted by-- the commodification of women, whether it's determined, dogged, playful, defensive, or what-have-you.

I love this

Why doesn't the Pennsylvania Library Association do this for us?

Thanks for sharing. The pirate Banned Books Week theme is fun this year, but mudflap girl deserves a t-shirt.

Thanks! I just sent it off to my mom the reference librarian. Mudflap Girl is probably too spicy for her small-town library... but we'll see!
