Cooperative extension services strikes again...

Ok, I'm a big fan of the Cooperative Extension Services (http://www.csrees.usda.gov/) of the Department of Agriculture. Not only do they collect and distribute loads of information on food, gardening, etc., they often run free programs, like the one where you take a class on composting and get a free compost bin. So, when I'm stumped about a home ec or agriculture question, I check with the Cooperative Extension. (You can also get your local cooperative extension to hook you up with Master Gardeners in your area, find people to teach classes in related fields, etc. Sometimes they run farm tours with free food and stuff. Generally what I consider a great use of my tax funds and a lot of volunteer time.)

Anyway, I needed to buy 12 straw bales. Preferable in the Lehighton PA / Schnecksville PA area. (Backstops for archery for the event this weekend.) Nobody from up there knew of a place. I tried the local papers and was mortified: there were no ads for hay or straw for sale. Yes, Bunny, we're not in Lancaster anymore. Now what?

Well, it can't hurt: I call Carbon County Cooperative Extension and explain my problem. The person who answers the phone goes and asks the Ag agent. He suggests one store that might have some for sale, or might know of somebody who does. Bingo! They've got them, they will sell them to me, everyone's happy. Somebody get this guy a green super hero cape!
