I think one of my biggest faults as a recreationist cook is that I have "kitchen spices" and "SCA spices." Those items like long pepper, in the Tigers&Strawberries article, or other items that I might have somehow obtained sit in the cupboard waiting for me to do a recreation instead of waiting for me to simply cook. More's the pity. One notable exception is the spice mix I made from Apicius that served as the Midrealm War Pay one year for all its fighters and allies (and continues to serve as war pay for Legio Draconis). I use *that* all the time. I really need to simply use my spice cupboard ALL the time as opposed to when I make a particular recipe.

Hm, now I have to check. I'm pretty sure that what I get for Golden Squirrel is not the Balinese. It would be interesting to do a comparison.

I actively hunted, and eventually found, long pepper. We no longer stock Tellicherry in the pepper mill.

I agree with Iasmin, it is time to do more regular uses of the spices.
