I couldn't agree with you more. I am a university librarian and it never ceases to amaze me in our library system how many new books are given minimal cataloging and then are sent immediately to the offsite book depository. They never even see the shelf of the main library. Obviously much of this has to do with space issues, you've gotta put 9 million books somewhere, but I do think it does a disservice to patrons.
