It's all gonna be bits and pieces for a while, so...

- I found out that my local arabic grocery store carries new olive oil/castile soap. In blocks. Cheap. If you pass through Allentown PA, it's the Elias Market on Tilghman Street.

- There is a fairly clear image of a 14th c. spinning wheel (hand operated, and with a quill not a whatsis) in Medieval Rural Life in the Luttrell Psalter by Janet Backhouse. (Univ. of Toronto) (Yes, I got this for $16 at in the book room at the Medieval Congress in Kalamazoo.)

- A much older text, Shahar, Shulamith. The Fourth Estate: a History of Women in the Middle Ages (I dragged myself through this yesterday and will post a review/summary soon) has as one of its best features, a repro plate (black and white, unfortunately) showing a manuscript illustration of a woman carding wool, with cards. Not combs-- cards. Of course the author can't seem to tell the difference between spinning and weaving but the illustration is clear.

- Sylvia Landsberg's excellent The Medieval Garden is out in from U. of Toronto in paperback. I think one of my students is getting the copy I just bought, as a gift.

- Another good text that I hadn't seen before is Flowers in Medieval Manuscripts by Celia Fisher. Part of the U. of Toronto's "Medieval Life in Manuscript" series. Very good images, and also a good discussion of what flowers were used where. (I'll review it later).

-

- If you find yourself in the airport at Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids and the snack shop is still selling "Classic Egg Salad" sandwiches, definitely get one. It's the owner's mother's recipe, and the best egg salad I've ever had. The bread-- squishy slices- was nothing to write home about, though. On my way back from the Congress I got to talk to the owner and she says it's just eggs, good mayo, and pepper, but the eggs are cut bigger than usual and it's hand-mixed. (They also bake most of the baked goods on site.)
