Browsing in the Reference stacks yesterday, I came across this:
Deal, William E. Handbook to Life in Medieval and Early Modern Japan. (NY: Facts on File, 2006)

I'm no expert, so I can't tell you how accurate it is. Perhaps one of the Japanese SCA folk can. But it's a very nice little book, covering historical context, land, environment & population, government, society & economy, warriors & warfare, religion, philosophy, education & science, language & literature, performing arts, art & architecture, travel & communication, and everyday life. It also has some nice illustrations, particularly of models of medieval/early period scenes from the Edo-Tokyo Museum. References and charts are reasonably prolific.

The everyday life part was the one I zeroed in on, and I found it easy to read, while perhaps a bit skimpy, it stil covered a good selection of information for the period 1185 to 1868. That section gave the impression of a collection of information not otherwise covered. Other sections were more solid and I found them very helpful to understanding cultural references I've heard.
